Jimi Hendrix at Monterey Pop

Jimi Hendrix: Photographed by Jill Gibson

Exclusive License Offers to Celebrate
the legendary musician’s 75th year.

This week Globe Photos is celebrating what would have been legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix’s 75th birthday.

The Monterey International Pop Music Festival was a three-day concert event held in 1967 at the Monterey County Fairgrounds. The festival is remembered for the first major American appearances by The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Hendrix’s use of extremely high volumes, the feedback this produced, along with his dive-bombing use of the vibrato bar on his guitar produced sounds that none of the audience had ever heard before. This, along with his look and his erotic antics onstage, had an enormous impact on the audience.

Jill Gibson was an experienced photojournalist by 1967, and became the official photographer for The Monterey Pop Festival. These are her images, many of which have never been released prior to now.

To celebrate and commemorate Hendrix’s birthday, Globe Photos is offering licensing for these images for the first time.
