This image captures Bob Hite of Canned Heat singing into a handheld microphone during the Monterey International Pop Festival. With his eyes closed and one hand pressed to his ear, Hite appears completely absorbed in the performance, reflecting the forceful vocal style that earned him the nickname “The Bear.”

Canned Heat’s appearance at Monterey came during the band’s early rise and placed their blues-rooted sound alongside many of the era’s leading rock acts. Fronted by Hite, the group became an important part of the late 1960s counterculture and would later perform at Woodstock in 1969.
