This black and white image captures Rock Hudson seated shirtless in a director’s chair alongside director George Stevens on the set of Giant. Wearing sunglasses and Western-style pants, Hudson listens intently as Stevens stands beside him, offering a candid behind-the-scenes glimpse into the making of the sweeping Texas drama. Circa 1955.

Rock Hudson starred as wealthy Texas rancher Bick Benedict opposite Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean in Giant. Directed by George Stevens and released in 1956, the epic drama became one of Hudson’s defining films and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, while Stevens won the Oscar for Best Director.

About the Photographer

Frank Worth was a confidant and friend to many Hollywood stars during Hollywood's "Golden Age," when they were constrained by the powerful studio system. Due to these close relationships, Worth captured stars in elements and scenes not seen elsewhere. This is his famed collection.
